The four main food groups are the different kinds of foods that you need to grow
up healthy and strong. The four main food groups are meat and fish, breads and
cereals, fruits and vegetables and dairy.
When you eat meat and fish, did you know that you are helping your body make little things called cells? Cells are the building blocks of your body. Foods from the meat and fish food group give your body protein so it can make new cells. Milk and cheese are part of the dairy food group. Foods from this group give your body proteins and fats. Fats are stored in your body as energy for your cells. Foods from the breads and cereals food group give your body things called carbohydrates and fiber. Carbohydrates give your body quick energy so you can run, jump and play. Fiber helps you digest your food. Apples and carrots are foods found in the fruits and vegetables food group. Fruits and vegetables are a good source of fiber and give your body the vitamins and minerals it needs to be healthy and strong. Here are a few foods from the meat and fish food group. Do you eat... Pork Chops, Turkey, Chicken, Hamburger, Tuna or Crab? Here are a few foods from the dairy food group. Do you drink milk? Do you eat... Butter, Cottage Cheese, Yogurt, Cheese or Ice Cream? Here are some foods from the breads and cereals food group. Do you eat... Bread, Cereal, Biscuits, Oats, Wheat or Rice? Here are some foods from the fruits and vegetables food group. Do you eat... Apples or Oranges? Bananas or Carrots? How about Lettuce or Potatoes? It is important that you eat foods from each of the four food groups every day. If you eat the right amount of foods from each group every day, you will have a balanced diet and grow up healthy and strong.
